People who have never suffered, culinarily speaking, may make light of the Award for Valor in Heroic Food Preparation Above and Beyond the Call of Duty. But there are those of us who know how it feels when a guest looks dubiously at his or her plate and says, "Am I supposed to eat this?" Not to mention the guest who says, "I thought souffles were supposed to be . . . you know . . . kind of puffy."

Those who have suffered will be pleased to know they have earned an award. An award which, furthermore, costs them nothing beyond the blood, sweat, and tears they have already shed.

The best description of these awards is contained in Chapter 6 of Steamin' Down the Tracks with Viola Hockenberry, and you will, of course, want to purchase the book so you can read not only about your very own award for heroism but about many other delightful things. But I would hate to add to the sufferings of you have suffered so much already, and you can access
